Model Turned Comedian is New York-based artist and comedian Heather Guertin's first project with Social Malpractice Publishing. This comical work of fiction traces the story from a first-person perspective of a young woman working as a "model" in Los Angeles, CA. Over a period of several years, she transitions into a career stand-up comic who achieves a considerable amount of success while alienating many of those around her. Guertin, a painter, draws comparisons between the struggles of a modern day Pierrot with that of a contemporary artist. This publication was originally produced in a limited run of 50 for the 2012 New York Art Book Fair, and is currently being repressed in collaboration with Publication Studio in Portland, OR.

Heather Guertin received her Masters degree at the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a painter and writer and has performed stand up comedy in galleries in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.  This is her first novella. Working across distinct genres, Guertin overlaps mediums allowing for new forms of communication. The paintings make appearances in the performances, while Model Turned Comedian was inspired by her writing for stand-up.  These art forms ultimately compound and contextualize the paintings with specific words, phrases and a particular sense of comedic timing.  The paintings embody a comparison between the methods of painting and comedy — there is preparation and rehearsal, then the creative act, which happens in an immediate gesture, with potential for mistakes and improvisation.

Heather Guertin's work has been exhibited in New York at Marianne Boesky Gallery, Bortolomi, Harris Lieberman, Renwick Gallery and Lisa Cooley and in Los Angeles at Young Art.  She was also included in the Prague Biennale and in exhibitions at the Emily Harvey Foundation and Ludlow 38 in New York.
